ผ้าขาวม้า (Pha Kao Ma): The Authentic Fabric of Thailand

ผ้าขาวม้า เป็นผ้าสารพัดประโยชน์ที่คนไทยใช้มาแต่โบราณ ส่วนใหญ่ผู้ใช้จะเป็นเพศชาย สามารถใช้นุ่งอาบน้ำ เช็ดตัว คลุมหัวกันแดด หรือทำเปลก็ได้ ผ้าขาวม้า เป็นศิลปวัฒนธรรมอันล้ำค่าแขนงหนึ่งที่บรรพบุรษของไทยแต่โบราณได้สร้างสมไว้จนกลายเป็นมรดกล้ำค่าที่ตกทอดมาจนถึงปัจจุบัน ผ้าขาวม้าได้สืบสานวิถีไทยสมัยก่อนที่เกิดจากภูมิปัญญาชาวบ้านเอาไว้ในลวดลายการทอที่เรียบง่าย ด้วยเหตุที่คนไทยมีวิถีชีวิตของความเป็นอยู่อย่างอบอุ่น มีธรรมชาติอันอุดมสมบูรณ์ ผ้าขาวม้า ถือเป็นอัตลักษณ์ของคนชนบท เป็นผ้าเอนกประสงค์เนื่องจากสามารถใช้งานได้กับทุกส่วนของร่างกาย ปัจจุบันความนิยมใช้ผ้าขาวม้าในสังคมเมืองได้จางหายไป แต่ยังคงมีให้เห็นอยู่บ้างในต่างจังหวัดแล้ว เนื่องจากคนเมืองส่วนใหญ่เห็นว่าการนุ่งผ้าขาวม้าออกนอกบ้านเป็นสิ่งที่เชย แต่ในปัจจุบันยังมีกลุ่มคนหนึ่งที่เห็นคุณค่าของผ้าขาวม้า ผ้าขาวม้าจึงถูกนำมาประยุกต์ใช้ให้มีความร่วมสมัยมากขึ้น เช่น นำมาตัดเย็บเป็นกระเป๋า หมวก เสื้อ รองเท้าเดินในบ้าน เป็นต้น

Thai loincloth (Called "Pha-Kao-Ma" in Thai) is a basic stable piece in Thai's household. It is a multipurpose garment. Used as a sarong, towel, sash, carrying, wrapping and etc. It is one of the most precious Thai art and culture from which has been transferred the ancient period through today. Pha-Kao-Ma has been inherited Thai traditional living style through simple texture of Thai loincloth. In accordance with the warm Thai lifestyle and plentiful natural resources, Pha-Kao-Ma is the identity of Thai people living in countryside and the muti-purpose cloth which can be adapt to every part of our bodies. At present, the popularity of Pha-Kao-Ma or Thai loincloth has been fading away from Thai society especially in the metropolis due to their beliefs that wearing loincloths are out of date. In contrary, there are some people who still appreciate the value of Pha-Kao-Ma since they are applied into more contemporary manners such as shirts, hats, flip flops, and handbags.
